RHAPSODY Κ (Circe the witch)
Having lost their friends on the island of the Laistrygons and with a heavy heart, Odysseus and his companions reached the island of Circe. Circe was a sorceress, sister of King Aetes of Colchis. The crew split into two groups. Odysseus' group would stay on the ship to do maintenance, while the other led by Eurylochus would explore the island.
Eurylochus with half the crew arrived in front of the gates of a palace. There they were welcomed by the fairy Circe who charmed them with her beauty and the opulence of the palace. But Eurylochus remained outside the palace full of suspicion. Circe filled the table with delicious food and offered it to Odysseus' companions, but inside the plates she had poured a magic potion that soon transformed all the men into frightened pigs. Eurylochus, who escaped this horror, hastened to the ship to tell everything to Odysseus.
Odysseus set out to face the wicked witch, but he would surely be in trouble if he didn't have the support of the gods. So Hermes found him and gave him a protective herb against Circe's magic. When she set the table for Odysseus, she waited in vain for him to change into a pig. Odysseus threatened the witch with his sword, forcing her to turn all his companions back into humans.
Circe obeyed and even laid a rich table for all of Odysseus' people, to express her apology. In fact, she fell in love with Odysseus and suggested that he stay there with her, but she already knew that this was not going to happen, so she decided to help him. He advised him that in order to return to Ithaca, he had first to descend to Hades, so that the seer Teiresias, who was in the world of the dead, would reveal to him the way.
Circe revealed to Odysseus that he had to go to a distant island. There he would dig a deep pit, into which he would pour milk and honey, so that the gate to the world of the dead would open.
